Initiatives

Our initiatives & community programmes

Four continuous programmes, delivered free of charge to members throughout the year.

Programme 01

Digital Inclusion & Smart Technology Training

An eight-week cycle, repeated three times a year, taught in groups of six so nobody is left behind. Members bring their own phone or tablet and learn what they actually need: video calls with children abroad, the e-Građani portal, prescription renewals, recognising fraudulent SMS messages, safe online banking, and photographs. Volunteer tutors include secondary school students and retired professionals. Devices are lent to members who do not own one.

  • Groups of six, never larger
  • Own-device learning with lending pool
  • Fraud and scam recognition module
  • One-to-one follow-up clinic every Thursday

Programme 02

Active Aging & Health Promotion Workshops

Movement, nutrition and well-being sessions built with physiotherapists and nurses from local services. Weekly gentle exercise and balance classes reduce fall risk; seasonal walking groups follow the coastal promenade at three different paces. Nutrition circles cover cooking for one, affordable seasonal menus and diabetic diets. Twice yearly we host open screening days for blood pressure, blood sugar and vision.

  • Weekly balance and mobility classes
  • Three-pace coastal walking groups
  • Nutrition circles and cooking-for-one sessions
  • Biannual free health screening days

Programme 03

Social Integration & Legal Rights Advocacy in the EU Context

Retirement should not mean losing your voice. We hold monthly rights clinics where members can ask about pension calculations, healthcare entitlements, housing and utility support, inheritance and consumer disputes. Where a matter is systemic, we escalate it: written submissions to the city, the county and national ministries, and participation in EU-level consultations on active aging and age discrimination.

  • Monthly legal rights clinic with volunteer advisers
  • Cross-border pension and healthcare guidance
  • Written advocacy to municipal and national bodies
  • EU consultation participation on age equality

Programme 04

Intergenerational Exchange & Cultural Preservation

Students from Rijeka secondary schools join our members as technology tutors, and our members return the favour as oral-history narrators, craft teachers and cooking mentors. Recorded interviews document the maritime, industrial and domestic history of the Kvarner region. Seasonal cultural outings to Trsat, Opatija and the islands are subsidised so that cost never decides who takes part.

  • School partnership tutoring exchange
  • Recorded oral-history archive of the Kvarner region
  • Traditional craft and cooking sessions
  • Subsidised accessible cultural outings

In our members' words

  • “I had a smartphone for two years and used it only for calls. Now I see my grandson in Dublin every Sunday evening. That is not a small thing at seventy-nine.”

    Đurđica M.

    Member since 2018, Svilno

  • “After my husband died the flat was very quiet. The Tuesday coffee club and the walking group gave me a reason to put my coat on.”

    Nada K.

    Member since 2021, Zamet

  • “The rights clinic sorted out my pension years from Germany. Nobody at any counter had explained it to me in five years.”

    Branko S.

    Member since 2015, Sušak
